Workhouse Dead

“They had a silent death, completely unremarked upon.”

The following is list of people who died in the Dungannon Workhouse between 12 August 1842 and 24 March 1847. This short sample contains the names of 189 people who died in that period, although there is a gap in the records from September 1845 to March 1847, when it is likely that many people died within the workhouse. Of these some 34 people were from Dungannon; 22 from Tullyniskin; 18 from Donaghmore; 18 from Drumaspil , while 14 were from the ‘Union at large’, meaning that they had no defined area or it could not be ascertained. Of this sample the average age of those who died was 40.6 years, but such a figure is misleading in trying to fully understand who used the workhouse during the 1840s when Famine gripped the land. There were a number of occasions within this period (1842-1847) when the number of deaths rose dramatically including during March 1847 when over 34 people died.

The first to die in the workhouse was Francis Corrigan in August 1842 who was described as being from ‘the union at large’. The youngest was James Leonard of Dunagnnon who died in March 1844 and only survived a day, while the oldest was Anne Boyle aged 91 from Tullyniskin who died in October 1844. In total, sixteen children under the age of one died in the workhouse during this period, while 63 were over the age of sixty and of that five were ninety plus.
The admission dates of people who died in the Dungannon Workhouse in later decades, for example, suggest that many people simply entered the workhouse for treatment in the infirmary or to die, assured of a place of burial.
